What Really Causes Hair Loss? Discover the True Cause and How to Fix It

Hair loss is a major concern for many guys. Some experience hair loss early in their 20s, some by approaching 30s, and the luckiest ones by approaching mid 50s. But most of us will deal with it one day. It can be thinning hair, it can be receding front hairlines, or balding in certain areas.

If this sounds familiar, know that you're not alone. The good news? In most cases, hair loss can be slowed down, stopped, and actually reversed. The key is to understand the cause and give your hair what it needs to grow strong and healthy.

The Main Culprit: DHT and Its Impact on Hair

Once you dive into the topic of hair loss, you will encounter the name - dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a hormone derived from testosterone.

DHT binds to hair follicles, causing them to shrink over time. This leads to weaker hair that eventually stops growing, a process known as balding.

Can DHT Be Stopped? Yes, but Not Just with Blockers

Many people focus on blocking DHT with medications, but that has many negative side effects. You can as well keep the DHT out there, and just boost strenght of your hair. Then some DHT just does not matter anymore.

How so? It’s important to realize that hair is not the body’s priority. When the body lacks essential nutrients, it directs them to vital organs like the heart, brain, and muscles - leaving hair follicles starved and vulnerable. The DHT is just the final nail in the coffin of your hair growth. But it starts with lack of nutrients.

Solution: Instead of just blocking DHT, supply your hair with extra nutrients to strengthen the follicles and extend the hair growth cycle.

Stress: The Silent Hair Killer

Stress: The Silent Hair Killer

When you're under long term stress, your body will produce hormones that also disrupts the hair growth.

Except of the hormones that have negative effects on your hair, stress also depletes key minerals and vitamins that are essential for hair growth, such as magnesium, zinc, and B vitamins.

Add that to the fact that your hair will receive less nutrition than in calm state, and you can see why this will very soon start to show on your hair.

Did you know? As a result of stress many people experience grey hair much earlier than necessary. But as with hair loss, this can be reversed: by getting extra nutrients to your scalp and roots of your hair. You may very well see your hair grow back in your color.

Poor Diet = Weak Hair

Hair needs - among other things - proteins, healthy fats, iron, zinc, and vitamins A, C, D, E, and B-complex to grow strong. If these nutrients are missing, your hair will become thin, brittle, and more likely to fall out.

For example:

  • Low protein intake → Hair grows slowly and becomes weak.
  • Iron and zinc deficiency → Follicles shrink, leading to increased shedding.
  • Low vitamin D levels → Often linked to excessive hair loss.

Solution: Eat a diet rich in quality proteins, healthy fats, and essential micronutrients.

Some of the best foods for hair growth include pumpkin seeds (high in zinc), nuts, salmon, eggs, leafy greens, and plant-based oils.

Wrong Hair Products and Aggressive Hair Care

Many people use shampoos and hair products filled with sulfates, silicones, and parabens, which can weaken the scalp and hair follicles over time. Silicones make hair feel smooth, but they create a barrier that suffocates the hair, while sulfates strip away natural oils, leaving the scalp dry and irritated.

Solution: Switch to natural hair care products that support hair growth instead of damaging it.

Wrong Hair Products and Aggressive Hair Care

Poor Blood Circulation in the Scalp

Weak blood circulation in the scalp means that hair follicles receive less oxygen and fewer nutrients, which slows hair growth and weakens the follicles.

Solution:

  • Scalp massages - Stimulate blood flow and activate hair follicles.
  • Essential oils (e.g. rosemary oil) - Improve circulation and promote hair growth.

Summary: How to Stop Hair Loss

  • Its not only DHT; DHT usually is just the final nail into the coffin;
  • Reduce stress & take care of oyur diet: rich on protein, iron, zinc, and essential vitamins.
  • Use natural hair care products free from harmful chemicals.
  • Improve scalp circulation with massages and essential oils.

Hair loss is not a losing battle. The fact that your body produces DHT does not mean that you have to go bold.

It only means, that you have to take extra care of your hair compared to other people. With the right approach, you can restore your hair’s strength, thickness, and growth.
